I. Governing Authority

The National High School BBQ Association® (NHSBBQA®) is the sanctioning and governing body for LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ implementation.

This Safety Doctrine is issued under the authority of NHSBBQA® and serves as the foundational safety framework for all sanctioned activities involving:

  • Live fire cooking

  • Charcoal combustion

  • Wood-fired cooking

  • Propane systems

  • Outdoor fire-based culinary instruction

This document establishes institutional safety expectations, not optional classroom guidelines.

II. Document Control

III. Core Safety Commandments

The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ operates under the following Ten Commandments of Live Fire Safety:

  1. Respect the flame. Fire is a controlled industrial process.

  2. Maintain a clearly enforced safety perimeter.

  3. Wear proper protective equipment at all times.

  4. Never leave live fire unattended.

  5. Verify fuel, airflow, and ignition systems before lighting.

  6. Maintain immediate access to suppression equipment.

  7. Monitor thermal conditions using calibrated instruments.

  8. Control grease accumulation and flare-up hazards.

  9. Fully extinguish and verify thermal neutrality.

  10. Enforce standards. Safety is leadership.

These principles are visibly posted in all LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ environments.

IV. Regulatory Alignment

The LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ Safety Doctrine aligns with established industry standards including:

  • NFPA 1 — Fire Code

  • NFPA 96 — Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations

  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910 — General Industry Fire Safety Standards

Local fire marshal regulations, school district policies, and state education agency requirements supersede where applicable.

NHSBBQA® Charter Members are responsible for ensuring local compliance.

V. Required Safety Infrastructure

All sanctioned LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ sites must maintain:

  • Approved fire extinguishers (Class K and ABC as applicable)

  • Clear and marked safety perimeters

  • Adult supervision at all times

  • Fuel storage in accordance with local code

  • Approved ignition procedures

  • Calibrated thermometers

  • Grease management protocols

  • Post-event thermal verification procedures

Failure to maintain these requirements may result in:

  • Suspension of Charter status

  • Loss of competition eligibility

  • Revocation of LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ authorization

VI. Instructor & Marshal Authorization

Each LIVE FIRE LEARNING LAB™ location must maintain:

  • Instructor signature acknowledgment

  • Fire Marshal review where required

This ID must be included on:

  • Safety documentation

Reports must include:

  • Probationary status

  • Charter suspension

  • Event disqualification

  • Permanent revocation

NHSBBQA® maintains full authority to enforce safety standards to protect students, schools, and community partners.

Safety is leadership.
Safety is institutional responsibility.
